“Crazy Homeless Man” Essay Free Essays

As we got in, we saw nothing out of the ordinary; you had your regular business man with too much product in his perfectly combed hair, that seemed as though he had spent hours on it, reading his newspaper while tapping his overpriced shoes on the floor, screaming little kids jumping up and down and swinging from the poles while their negligent nannies, totally oblivious of the whole scene, sit quietly reading their new editions of Harry Potter, and finally the homeless guy on the corner seat wrapped up in old newspapers and a dirty fleece, probably found while searching through some garbage, trying to get a good nap in before he has to switch trains. He said, â€Å"Child, this train is dirty! † He moved around the train trying not to fall or lose his balance as he swept the floor with the old sock. He then took out an air deodorizer and started spraying it on the train walls. My cousin and I tried so hard not to laugh. We looked away so that we weren’t tempted. Our giggles and smiles soon changed into surprised, scared, frozen expressions as the man took out a lighter and said, â€Å"I can’t take this dirty train anymore. † I knew because of my immature eighth grade friends that when someone had an aerosol†¦ How to cite â€Å"Crazy Homeless Man† Essay, Essay examples

Football was called a friendly game of fight. form was played with a box ball. There were fifteen to thirty players per side, and the object of the game was to pick up the ball and run it through to the goal, passing the ball to teammates mates if tackled. This game is kind of like modern day rugby. The second version was played with wooden sticks and a ball. The ball was hit through the air and into a goal; it was kind of like modern day hockey. Wrestling made its Olympic start in the Games of 708 B. C. It was a much more violent, punishing sport in the early days, when it had closer ties to military training. Wrestling spread through the Roman world, and became popular in the Renaissance period. Grappling and wrestling have a long tradition in Europe. In the early 1 sass, many soldiers, scholars, priests, and nobles wrote how wrestling was important in preparing aristocratic youth for military service. During the renaissance, wrestling remained popular in Europe and it was enjoyed. Many monarchs went to the wrestling matches for entertainment. Jousting is a competition between two knights or men on horseback, and each knight rises to knock the other off his horse. Jousting was at its all-time high popularity in the 14th to 16th century. The two knights that were going head to head were equipped with three weapons. A lance, a one-handed sword, and a shield. When one knight was knocked off his horse, he was considered the winner of the round. If both knights were knocked off their horse at the same time, it was considered a tie, and they would start a sword fight on the ground, and the last one standing was considered the winner. The knights usually Jousted a best out of three matches. Jousting tournaments were held as military exercises between various nobles. Some tournaments started peacefully but often turned into bloody battles between rivals. Winning a tournament was a way for a lowborn knight to become popular and win riches. Death Be Not Proud Quotes

'Death Be Not Proud' Quotes Death Be Not Proud is a 1949 memoir written by American journalist John Gunther, about his son Johnny, who was a Harvard-bound teenager when he was diagnosed with cancer. He fought bravely to try to help doctors find a cure for his ailment, but died at age 17. The books title comes from a sonnet by metaphysical poet John Donne: Death, be not proud, though some have called theeMighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;For those whom thou thinkst thou dost overthrowDie not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,And soonest our best men with thee do go,Rest of their bones, and souls delivery.Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,And poppy or charms can make us sleep as wellAnd better than thy stroke; why swellst thou then? One short sleep past, we wake eternallyAnd death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die. Here are some quotes and questions for consideration from John Gunthers Death Be Not Proud. God is whats good in me. Johnny Gunther said this at the age of 6, and it shows that even as a small child, he had a desire to do something meaningful and good for the world. Why do you think his father chose to include this in the novel? Does it give us a better understanding of who Johnny is and the person he might have grown up to become? I have so much to do! And theres so little time! Rather than wallow in self-pity, this is Johnnys reaction after the first exam shows the tumor that has been giving him neck pain. He says it to his mother Frances, and it seems to suggest that he knew his diagnosis was terminal. What do you think Johnny meant by saying he had so much to do? A primitive to-the-death struggle of reason against violence, reason against disruption, reason against brute unthinking forcethis was what went on in Johnnys head. What he was fighting against was the ruthless assault of chaos. What he was fighting for, as it were, the life of the human mind. His father realizes that Johnnys battle is not just his own, but that hes seeking answers that will benefit others who may suffer the same illness. But even as he tries to think of a solution, the brain tumor is affecting Johnnys mind and his memory. Oh how tired I feel. What a gut-punch for Johnnys father to read this entry in the young mans diary. Johnny often tried to shield his parents from the depths of his suffering, and even this only touches on a fraction of what he must have been going through at the time. Did this make you think perhaps the treatments Johnny was enduring were not worth the pain he was enduring? Why or why not? Scientists will save us all. Taken out of context, this could be read as an ironic or angry statement about medicines failure to save Johnny from the effects of the brain tumor, but its actually a statement from Johnny himself, written in a final letter to his mother. He feels confident that his battle will not be in vain, and that even if hes not cured, the treatments the doctors tried for him will prompt further study. My grief, I find, is not desolation or rebellion at universal law or deity. I find grief to be much simpler and sadder... All the things he loved tear at my heart because he is no longer here on earth to enjoy them. All the things he loved! The devastating reaction of Johnnys mother Frances as she comes to terms with his death. Do you think this is a feeling commonly shared among the bereaved? How much more acute do you think this feeling is for bereaved parents? These quotes are just one part of our study guide on John Gunthers Death Be Not Proud. Start Something Using Process.Start in VB.NET

Start Something Using Process.Start in VB.NET The Start method of the Process object is possibly one of the most underappreciated tools available to a programmer. As a .NET method, Start has a series of overloads, which are different sets of parameters that determine exactly what the method does. The overloads let you specify just about any set of parameters that you might want to pass to another process when it starts. What you can do with Process.Start is really only limited by the processes you can use with it. If you want to display your text-based ReadMe file in Notepad, its as easy as: Process.Start(ReadMe.txt)or Process.Start(notepad, ReadMe.txt) This example assumes the ReadMe file is in the same folder as the program and that Notepad is the default application for .txt file types, and its in the system environment path. Process.Start Similar to Shell Command in VB6 For programmers familiar with Visual Basic 6, Process.Start is somewhat like the VB 6 Shell command. In VB 6, you would use something like: lngPID Shell(MyTextFile.txt, vbNormalFocus) Using Process.Start You can use this code to start Notepad maximized and create a ProcessStartInfo object that you can use for more precise control: Dim ProcessProperties As New ProcessStartInfoProcessProperties.FileName notepadProcessProperties.Arguments myTextFile.txtProcessProperties.WindowStyle ProcessWindowStyle.MaximizedDim myProcess As Process   Process.Start(ProcessProperties) Starting a Hidden Process You can even start a hidden process. ProcessProperties.WindowStyle ProcessWindowStyle.HiddenBut be careful. Unless you add more code to end the process, youll probably have to end it in Task Manager. Hidden processes are normally only used with processes that dont have any kind of a user interface. Retrieving the Name of a Process Working with Process.Start as a .NET object gives you a lot of capability. For example, you can retrieve the name of the process that was started. This code will display notepad in the output window: Dim myProcess As Process Process.Start(MyTextFile.txt) Console.WriteLine(myProcess.ProcessName)This was something you could not do with the VB6  Shell command because it launched the new  application  asynchronously. Using  WaitForExit  can cause the reverse problem in .NET because you have to launch a process in a new thread if you need it to execute asynchronously. For example, if you need the components to remain active in a form where a process was launched and  WaitForExit  was executed. Ordinarily, those components wont be active. Code it up and see for yourself. One way to force the process to halt is to use the Kill method. myProcess.Kill() This code waits for ten seconds and then ends the process. However, a forced delay is sometimes necessary to allow the process to complete exiting to avoid an error. myProcess.WaitForExit(10000) if the process doesnt complete within 10 seconds, kill itIf Not myProcess.HasExited ThenmyProcess.Kill()End IfThreading.Thread.Sleep(1)Console.WriteLine(Notepad ended: _ myProcess.ExitTime _Environment.NewLine _Exit Code: _myProcess.ExitCode) In most cases, its probably a good idea to put your processing in a  Using  block to ensure that the resources used by the process are released. Using myProcess As Process New Process Your code goes hereEnd Using To make all this even easier to work with, there is even a  Process  component that you can add to your project so you can do a lot of the things shown above at  design time  instead of run time. One of the things that this makes a lot easier is coding events raised by the process, such as the event when the process has exited. You can also add a handler using code like this: allow the process to raise eventsmyProcess.EnableRaisingEvents True add an Exited event handlerAddHandler myProcess.Exited, _AddressOf Me.ProcessExitedPrivate Sub ProcessExited(ByVal sender As Object, _ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Your code goes hereEnd Sub But simply selecting the event for the component is a lot easier.

Chapter 8. WE TAKE NOTHING BY CONQUEST, THANK GOD Assignment

Chapter 8. WE TAKE NOTHING BY CONQUEST, THANK GOD - Assignment Example Though now when everything is forgotten, and it seems absolutely habitual and reasonable that these states belong to the US as they have become its pride and attraction. While several centuries ago these events caused numerous human victims and provoked serious disputes in the society. The question if this expansion can be considered justified or it is only a byproduct of the growing America`s pride and ambitions was raised in the society. Is there any way to persuade society and church that annexing the territories belonging to other nation is a necessary step for the country? Of course, there is! Such mechanisms as provoking revenge, manipulating socialoseopinion, and telling lies worked in the circumstances and will work as long as the human race exists. I was impressed by the thoughts of Colonel Hitchcock who managed to show the essence of this conflict and express the ambiguity of this choice for the nation: â€Å"I have said from the first that the United States are the aggressors. . . . We have not one particle of right to be here. ... It looks as if the government sent a small force on purpose to bring on a war, so as to have a pretext for taking California and as much of this country as it chooses, for, whatever becomes of this army, there is no doubt of a war between the United States and Mexico. . .. My heart is not in this business ... but, as a military man, I am bound to execute orders†. So after the horrible and cunning provocation which lead to the murder of the American General the country started acting more violently and forcefully. That was the time when the concept of the â€Å"manifest destiny† appeared and Americans felt the right to decide whom to live and whom to die. It is strange how the feeling of superiority can infect even religious people. The following quote evoked strong paradoxical feelings in me: â€Å"The Reverend Theodore Parker, Unitarian minister in Boston, combined eloquent criticism of

Media and its affect on Terrorism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Media and its affect on Terrorism - Essay Example The Government uses the media in attempts to limit the harm terrorist inflict to society and in attempts to punish or arrest those responsible for terrorist acts. The Government wants coverage to press forward their agenda and not the terrorists’ agenda. It uses the media to present terrorists as criminals and prevent glamorizing them so as to promote the perspective that blowing up a building, kidnapping a well-known individual, or hijacking an airplane are criminal acts despite the terrorists reasons (Raphael, 1). According to Joseph (1), well-known terrorist groups are adapting strategies and tactically progressing out because of comprehensive, global counterterrorism operations overseas. They are becoming expert at making use of homegrown terrorists, regional operatives, and communication technologies to the fullest, within reach for a long-term terror campaign against the United States. Nowadays, terrorist groups are enlisting, instigating, and guiding international strategies not just through Internet operations but by the use of a well planned, constant blend of propaganda videos as well as call-to-action messages disseminated via social media platforms, for example Face book, blogs, Twitter and YouTube (Joseph, 2). The social media framework of the terrorists is aiming disenfranchised youth with complex, fictional information and forming grassroots terrorists inside the borders of United States. thus, foreign jihadists are amplifying their chances of attacking the United States using a mix, multimedia community participant tactic intended to persuade citizen extremists to violence, organize ideological movements, create opportunities to enlist within the United States from relating world incidents, and promote domestic terrorists to lay down their own objectives and take direct action in the company of open-ended and open-source jihad at home. The tactic of getting together

Education in Culture Essay Example for Free

Education in Culture Essay Education in today’s world is far more different from the education it was before. Nowadays, as technologies and industries progress onwards, the need for education becomes more vital. Education is about learning and also teaching skills. As a part of the society, education has played major roles not only on passing culture from one generation to another but also in helping establish a more stable society. Education also denotes on the process of drawing out certain skills or making someone realize the use of some skills that he has on its own. And as the world develops, the entirety of education also has changed. Now, it encompasses different disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, biology, history, sciences, sociology and many others. Education is believed to have started once a person is born and ends until he dies. Each and every person defines education differently from others. Education can be attained even without the presence of proper schooling. It is the experience and the applications of the things learned that counts on what one has attained. Different cultures in the world have a different point of view on the idea of education. Their definition and ideas about education is highly embarked on the way they spend their everyday lives, how they eat their food, how they please their gods or how they rear their young. Basically, perspectives about education and how learning is done in a particular place is based on their culture. The United States is one of the countries that belong to the Western culture. Its culture started even before it became a country. Now, as the world progresses and along with the different factors of culture combination and transfer, the United States is one of the diverse and multi cultural nations. Due to the strong British ties that have happened in the past, the United States’ culture is greatly influenced by the British culture. Other influences also include European countries who once take part in the history of the US such as Poland, Italy, Germany, Ireland and the Natives of America. Due to rampant migration and trade during the past, the western part of Africa has also played important roles in the structure of culture of the United States today. As one of the leading countries in the world today, the culture of the United States requires education as one of the needs of its each and every citizen. In its education system, children ranging from the ages five to six are necessitated to attend school. At the age of five most children starts schooling in kindergarten, then, they attend elementary from ages six to eleven, middle school from eleven to fourteen then high school from fourteen to eighteen. There are two forms of education in the States: public and private. Public education in the United States is funded by the federal government and by each of the individual states. These funds came mainly from the taxes in the city of the states and not as education fund given by the federal government. On the other hand, private education in the United States receives little or no government support at all. And since most of the private schools are governed by religious organizations, these private institutions are disqualified from direct government support. Students who have graduated from the secondary level may still pursue education in universities. There are different Universities in the States. Some are funded both by the local and federal government and some are governed by private institutions. Due to the status of the United States in the world today, it is one of the countries in the world with the most advanced and most extensive educational systems and procedures. Education as a primary requirement in the States is offered in all levels: from the children to the youth and even to the adults. Aside from learning as its main propose, education in the States seeks to promote wisdom, democracy, nationalism, equality and development not only of the state and the country but also the self. Stereotypes of the Russian Home at the 1851 Great Exhibition in Paris E

Russian House Since the 1851 Great Exhibition, world's fairs have always attempted to celebrate cultural diversity. In pavilions, participating countries promoted their natural resources and industrial products, while celebrating their national identity. However, not all cultures could be accurately portrayed. These exhibits did not prevent negative stereotypes about other people's cultures for persisting. Stereotyping almost became an art form, and was particularly apparent at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris, where specific buildings were built to exemplify architectural stereotypes of different countries. As part of an exhibition called L'Histoire de L'Habitation Humaine or History of Human Habitation, which was the creation of architect Charles Garnier. Many of these small structures related to remote and "exotic" locations around the world. One of the countries that received the exotic treatment was Russia, despite this country's political power. Charles Garnier was born in 1825 and studied architecture at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts. After he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1848, he went to study architecture in Italy. In 1860, Garnier won the competition for the new Paris Opera House, which was not completed until 1875 and remains his most important commission. His other works include villas he built in Bordighera, Italy, an Observatory in Nice, the Cercle de la Librairie in Paris, and many very famous works in Monte Carlo, including a casino resort. Charles Garnier was also a self-appointed expert in world cultures and their architecture. Thanks to the fame he had acquired at the Paris Opera House, he was asked by the fair commission to design "foreign" buildings for the World's Fair in 1889.
